Education has always played a very important role in Kerala society. Traditional education was of various types. The sabha mathams imparted Vedic knowledge, the Kalaris taught youngsters martial arts and the village schools were run by teachers or gurus known as Asans or Ezhuthachans.

Modern day education is however different from the traditional set up. Kerala has many schools across the state. Some of these schools are wholly managed and run by the government. There are other schools that are known as “Aided schools.” These schools are managed by private trusts or communities but according to the guidelines laid down by the government. The financial aid for the upkeep and maintenance for these schools come from the state government. The third category of schools is the private schools that are wholly managed by private individuals, trusts or communities. The schools impart education in both the Mother tongue which is Malayalam as also in English. The schools in Kerala offer its students a choice of studying under the different education boards in the country. Thus there are CBSE schools that are affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, the ICSE schools whose students take the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education Examination at the end of the final year of their school education and the schools that are affiliated to the Kerala State Education Board.

The colleges that impart education at the graduate and post graduate levels are affiliated to any one of the three main universities in the state. These universities are the Kerala University at Thriuvananthapuram, Calicut University and the Mahatma Gandhi University located at Kottayam. Besides these colleges there are many professional colleges like engineering colleges, medical colleges, and law colleges as well as teacher training colleges. The Cochin University of Science and Technology is a premier institution that imparts education in the various fields of engineering and also in Management studies.
